How can I move on
When the thought of her won't give me peace?
It's taking a toll
Distraction won't let my mind at ease
What's it gonna take
To move past the mistakes I've made
When I look around
I see all it cost to get me here.

Each Day
The songs I haven't written
Are cluttering my thoughts
Move through each day
Distracted by her memory
Now I spend my days
Searching for the new normal
Are cluttering my thoughts
Move through each day
Distracted by her memory
Now I spend my days
Searching for the new normal

A Thousand Typewriters
This is not a poem. This is a quick sketch of my next album. I've been promising (threatening, really) to write my third album for the last four years. This spring I intend to do it. I've got sketches and notes and scraps of paper covered in verse. But there was nothing tying it all together until tonight.
My first album is called "Painted Rocks". The title was taken from a series of yellow painted rocks that were at the end of a road I drove on. They were to warn the driver not to drive into the reservoir. I thought that was an interesting symbol, so I used it. My second album is called "After the Happy Ending". The title is a reference to a brief fling I had at the end of my senior year in college. I used most of the songs in the album to explore my feelings about what happens after an ending, happy or otherwise.
Tonight the concept for my third album has finally come into focus. When I got home from work I remembered an old saying: A thousand monkeys typing on a thousand typewriters will eventually produce Shakespeare. The thoughts of the chaos of that fits exactly with where I am in my life right now. It also fits in with many of the lyrics I've been jotting down for the last four years.
Over the next days and weeks I'll be working on the lyrics for the songs that will make up my third album. It may start a little shaky but I have very high hopes now that I've got an over-arching concept to work with. Now to see where this leads me.
Something about harnessing the chaos
Ride the wave and hug the curl
Ride the wind and soar away
When you lose control
You gain perspective
A thousand pairs of hands
Banging away at a thousand typewriters
Will produce an awful sound
If you leave well enough alone
Alone won't be well enough.

Virtual Waiting, Virtual Phone
No matter my mind
No matter my brain
Just why I'm waiting
I cannot explain.
Is it hope or fear?
Is it trust or lust?
Is it fight or flight?
Is it boom or bust?
Turn my head away
And walk down the stairs
I lie to myself
And think I don't care.
Someday I won't wait
Someday I'll be fine
Someday I won't care
Someday I won't mind.
No matter my brain
Just why I'm waiting
I cannot explain.
Is it hope or fear?
Is it trust or lust?
Is it fight or flight?
Is it boom or bust?
Turn my head away
And walk down the stairs

And think I don't care.

Someday I won't care
Someday I won't mind.

Short Hop
No time to think
On this short flight.
My mind is full
On this cold night.
The passengers
Are half asleep
And the other half
Don't dare to peep.
My eyes are dry
But they won't close.
Too much going on
Inside my clothes.
So I'll write this poem
And use this time
To practice verse
And perfect my ryhyme.
Tomorrow night
I'll get more rest
Save up my strength
To do by best.
So goodnight my poem.
It's time to land
I'll pin you up
When next I stand.

New Year, New Hope
The ball's been dropped,
the champagne drunk
I'm home again
with empty trunk.
Saw many miles
and trod a few.
A trend for now
will continue.
I look ahead
and past the gate.
What goes beyond
I cannot say.
To start things off
I have to plan
for what's to come
and kick the can.

Flight (Draft 1)
My country looks strange
from ten thousand feet
The landmarks seem small.
no roads and no streets.
Only hills that roll
and highways that wind
past all horizons
and into my mind.
The clouds cast shadows
on the plains below.
A pleasing mosaic,
A place I might go.
Then I close my eyes,
think on what's below.
Millions of people,
with places to go.
Doing their business
without me in mind,
exactly the way
I know that I'd find.

A Long Pause
These two long weeks away from home,
and one more left to go,
have left me with a sudden sense
the road is all I know.
The stress begins to take its toll;
my body and my mind
cry out for rest I cannot give
until I have some time
But all my time away from home
allows me to reflect,
and ponder things both big and small
I often times forget.
The only thing I haven't done,
while traveling this land,
is keep up with my poetry.
So here goes; here I am!

Long Spring Walk
The trees give their shade
as we walk on the trail.
The sun peeking through,
but the branches prevail.
The sounds of the woods
ringing loud in my ears,
sends my mind to a place
I've held onto for years.
Thoughts of past summers
spent in cabins in woods,
of innocent times
and the bad and the good.
A stretch of the legs,
a stretch of my mind,
were two of the things
I expected to find.

No Stopping Now
The Ides of March have come and gone
And April's flowers too
The scorching sun that summer brings
has not, as yet, come due
there is no stopping now.
I'll probably survive this mess
although I'm not sure how.

May Day
A month of change begins today.
What can I say
to keep my mind
from going blind.
A cold hard rain has changed my plans
too bad for fans.
I like the flow
of outdoor shows.
I need to shop around some more
And knock on doors.
And change my plans
Before they can.
What can I say
to keep my mind
from going blind.
A cold hard rain has changed my plans
too bad for fans.
I like the flow
of outdoor shows.
I need to shop around some more
And knock on doors.
And change my plans
Before they can.
